This trunk I believe is all original. It has two pieces inside as in the pictures. I was told it was from 1877 but I'm not sure. It's my first one and I would like to know as much as possible. It is covered on the outside by thin metal. It also has very small wheels. It has no identifying marks. Please tell me as much as possible about it. Many thanks. Anna Sweeney
Once more the real expert should be here soon. But from my experience there isn't much to tell as they tend not to have maker's marks.
Anyway it is a camel back which is a high end trunk. It has the inserts so it is all that. Is the artwork on the inside of the trunk lid intact?
Out trunk experts like to restore them but I would leave this one as is.
Your trunk is a metal covered (probably had a crystallized finish) barrel top, cross slat trunk. It could very well have been sold as a Saratoga trunk, but that term was pretty loosely used by the 1880's. Your trunk is from the early 1900's as evidenced by the style (and materials) of the latches, slat clamps, etc. Great condition, have fun with it.
