This Knox pendant is model 500/95 in the Liberty sketch book.

It's about 6cm x 3.5cm, in 9ct gold, hallmarked WHH and Birmingham, 1904. Another apparently simple design until you look closely and take in its Celtic context.

There is a misconception that pieces like these were "mass-produced". However according to Stephen Martin the gold items were all hand crafted. You can read more on this link: http://www.drstephenmartin.com/pdf/Knox_Jewelry.pdf - cf p73 "The silver jewellery was mainly die stamped and hand finished while gold designs were handcrafted throughout."

I've shown the back views here of a few pieces I've posted recently, which hopefully show these items were individually hand fabricated, rather than stamped out, or cast from a mold. This is certainly apparent when you handle and examine the items.

This was the same business model as Farhner. They made 3 ranges, a trinket range, a mid-range and a hand made artist range. It's why you can see so many variations of the same design. It's like a never ending collecting opportunity!
