Found this ax head in an old mining camp (flats) in a canyon near Carson City Nevada. A friend thinks it's from ccassifying the 1850 gold rush days. Any ideas?

Looks like you have a "Claw Hatchet" head, with the claw.(front bottom), used for nail pulling partially rusted away. Now, if the maker's name is not visible, you can either try and clean some of the rust off, by brushing, soaking it in white vinegar or, Evaporust etc. Or, you can try and do a visual match up using the link below, or another like source. I doubt if you will ever nail it down to being used during the gold rush or not, but if you can find one that was being made at that time frame, it is sure possible.
