I spotted this on ebay recently and liked it immediately, in spite of not knowing what it was. I was the only bidder. Between purchase and delivery yesterdaysglass posted four Welz fan vases and the fourth made me think that this bowl may also be Welz.

Once delivered I turned to www.Kralik-glass.com and compared it with the Welz decor listed there as 'Red Yellow Black'. Of the two variations shown there this is the clear/spatter/clear type.

Quite a few of the examples there did have applied black glass 'trim' such as rigaree, though none had feet like these. No doubt someone will be able to tell me whether I'm right or wrong.

Gorgeous! LOL!!! I think instead of answering you they all went to the website you mentioned to look for their own!!! :)

Thank you, shareurpassion, it is a very good web site for those (like me) who know what they like but not always what it is. :-)

it is Welz! would You mind stating the size of the box? in a couple of hours I'll post an item which is same/very close in more recognizable Welz decor.
    4. sklo42 sklo42, 10 years ago
Thank you MacArt......your confirmation as to Welz is very welcome. Not stating the size was an oversight I've remedied. Looking forward to your post!

I just posted mine, it's not exactly the same but close, take a look

Recent, and absolutely indisputable, research findings have indicated that this style of foot was indeed used by Welz on some production. As a result of that, and the decor, I would tend to agree that this is a Welz piece. I also agree with MacArt's example being Welz production too. Nice find.... Had I seen this you would not have been the lone bidder.... :-)

      Ooooops......

It is certainly worth noting that many companies used this style of foot, and the foot alone "would not" point to an attribution.

Here's a 1925 catalog showing the curled foot as a Ruckl marker:

A "marker" as generally applied to glass production, would be something that could be assigned to a single company's production and used to ID their production exclusively. It can be a decor, a technique, or a physical characteristic such as a foot design. Many companies used this style of curled foot, including Loetz, Welz, Rückl.... and I am sure others.

Plain and simple..... calling it a "marker" for Rückl would simply not be supportable in any manner. Did they use the foot style..... yes... and so did a variety of other companies.

      Agree with your thoughts, welzebub.

Tends to be a lot of misinformation posted on here about ruckl "markers".

Reminds me of the lamp nipple that still is touted as a "reliable ruckl marker", despite being documented on lamps by other makers:

Sure.... that may possibly be a Rückl bowl, although I would certainly not take the sellers word for it. It is not in the linked ad above, or any set of the Tango exhibition images I am aware of, so I am not sure how one would determine the maker. Certainly not with the foot style alone.

Speaking only for myself of course, I guess I completely miss the point of the linked ebay listing.

Different foot placement on the underside of the bowl, completely different color ground, non contrasting feet relative to the color of the body of the vessel.

Yeah.... it is "kind of" similar.....
    17. charcoal charcoal, 10 years ago
The cobalt bowl in comment 15 has a paper Ruckl label.
    18. welzebub welzebub, 10 years ago
OK... I turned up the brightness and can see it..... My monitor was darkened. So it is a Rückl bowl.

I still do not get the point.

No one said Ruckl did not make a bowl with this type of foot, or that they did not make a similar shape.

I simply said many companies used a curled tri-foot design, and that it is not a marker for their production..... I stand by that statement.

In addition to Ruckl, Welz used this type of foot, as did Loetz...... that fact by itself would preclude the foot design from being a marker for Rückl production..... plain and simple.....

Is there some other point I am missing here?
    19. welzebub welzebub, 10 years ago
One other point regarding the label would be that although you can not see it well, or very clearly, it appears to be a form of label that was used for quite some time on Rückl product, and appears as late as the 1990's.

Wow, 65 years or maybe more of scrolled feet..... that sounds like a marker!

I guess your definition of what a marker is and my definition are completely different.

It is not the longevity of something that makes it a production marker. Quite the contrary...... It would be the uniqueness of that detail (decor, shape, technique, detail, etc) to a specific production house, and only that production house, that would make it a marker.

By definition a scroll foot being a "marker" would mean that any bowl with a scroll foot like that would be Rückl, and there is a more than enough evidence to show that simply is not true.

I guess if you really want to believe differently though, or redefine what the accepted use of the term "marker" is, I am certainly not interested in swaying you from that objective.
    22. scottvez scottvez, 10 years ago
Similar to the lamp nipple that is a "reliable ruckl marker", despite being documented on lamps by other makers!

For me this is the most convincing evidence that this lidded bowl is Welz.

I hope 'yesterdaysglass' will not mind me referring to his post. Otherwise I will remove the link.
