Someone jog my memory on the name of the wood with the checks/flashes that's used for the back. We don't use it in the islands so see it once in awhile.

Looks a lot like Tiger Oak on back rest ? Beautiful old chair !!

Mani, I have been racking my 2 brain cells trying to remember. Something like beech but don't think that's it. Not an oak though. Hickory or sycamore? I'm just not familiar with N. climate woods. I've even seen military gun stocks made with it.

Hi bb2 ! I only have one cell left so your ahead of me . I know I saw this type of wood on My Grandmothers chair but where is fhr he knows wood ? Hope all is good with you my friend !! Maybe tiger oak ?

Mani, I have 2 brain cells left, but they have to alternate. Now for the "good". Kicked Jacky out, had hurricane, whirlwind visit from friend, truck brakes went out while we had 6 days of more rain & storm. Yeah, things are going GREAT! LOL

The back looks like a veneer or 2 pieces put together . I can't make out back of chair clear to see if it is 2 pieces or a veneer .

Nice looking chair indeed. Oak and Ash are difficult to tell the difference, especially once a finish is applied. Ash was often substituted for Oak and nobody knew the difference. Odd part is that today the Ash pieces command more than oak. This chair looks great until you blow up picture #2. I would bet it has seen a bit of rework but that isn't obvious unless you draw a dividing line and compare both sides. It is certainly a keeper.

Roy, sometimes I wonder if it is worthwhile to respond to you? Don't see the wood grain in your reference & for your 2nd reference, - no furniture I have seen comes with leaves attached.

Look at my table bb2 and fhr and how I describe wood on it . The edges look like this chair .I just posted it

lol... all my chairs have leaves on them ..lol pine needles too...but you were trying to recall a northern wood,.. thought I throw out something to snap you out of your vapor lock you were in ..oh well...

"Vapor lock" is a good description right now!
