This is a leather topped end table. The drawers are numbered, 1 through 6, and the holes are in each drawer and lined up under each other. The shop owner did not know what it was used for and I have been searching through online sites to no avail. If you can help me identify what it was used for and the approximate age, I would appreciate it.

The Masonite bottoms of the drawers came about in the 1930's on...

As to the use, my guess is there were trays or inserts, or what was stored in them were flat objects that may have been difficult to initially pick up, or could be damaged especially on the edges, so the hole in the bottom of the drawer allowed one to open the drawer, then push up the contents from the underside making it easyer to remove them.

It may have been for a turntable with the drawers for 78's record storage. Brunswick, for example had music index catalogue that organized all of their music by number. You could look up a song, find the number and know which drawer to look in to find it.

      Just a thought,

Than you - that helps a lot. Someone had suggested sheet music, but this is pretty much the same train of thought.
