Most of what I learned about this bowl (until now nicknamed "The Sputnik Bowl") was learned through another collector on Collector's Weekly.
William Forauer and Elmer Gross were artists and life partners living and working together in their Greenwich Village studio in the 1960's. William is remembered in his obit as having a great sense of humor. I think it comes through in their work. Their mid-century modern designs range from quirky artistic figures to usable dishware, including this 3-footed bowl from his "Atomic" collection. It's the only I've seen like it, so I thought it was important to share!
The bowl is 5-1/2 inches square and 3-5/8 inches tall. It's hand-formed and asymmetrical. Each side has its own unique atomic design.
I have two cups by this artist.
