Hello,
I'm new to Collector's Weekly, this is my first post. I have just acquired a lot of items and need some experienced collectors to help me identify some of the items.
First, a Fruit Jar. The initials (L & W) are in script and I believe they stand for Lorenz & Wightman. I was able to find info. about them, but not the actual Fruit Jar. The Jar measures 9.75" x 2.5" dia.(top) x 4.25" dia. (base). The bottom of the Jar also reads L & W. The cap reads "Use Pin" and "PAT OCT 27, 1868 (Not positive about the last number).
Is this a common or rare jar? Is it a collectible jar?
Any info. about the actual Jar, would be greatly appreciated.

The "use pin" refers to the stopper - A. Kline (circa 1863) probably sold his patent
rights to a glass manufacturer. Perhaps to Adam R. Samuel. - the term "USE PIN" on the stopper referred to the use of a pin pushed between the stopper and the gasket to allow entry of air into the jar for easier release of the stopper. The two lugs on top of the stopper were used with a stick or other object to twist the stopper for seating or release. The "Kline jars" were also made by Lorenz &
Wightman of Pittsburgh. These were embossed L&W on the side of the jar. This may be a case where Lorenz & Wightman served the west, while Samuel served the east. It is more likely that Samuel made the jars until 1868 followed by Lorenz & Wightman – in business from 1863 to 1873. - Your jar is shown on this site (Figure 39) - it is noted as on page 120 but when I used the scroll feature it was noted as page 26. - http://www.sha.org/bottle/pdffiles/arsamuel.pdf

You're welcome for the help - and may I add, that's a real nice early fruit jar - wow, at least 140 years old!!
