Shown is a stoneware jug known as a face jug. They were often built by southern slaves. They used broken items that they found from around the local area such as buttons, broken dinner china, and anything that they could find to enhance the facial features of their pottery jugs.
I, as of yet, have not found out the reason for the often grotesque expressions found on these jugs, perhaps it was because of the plight that they suffered as slaves. They have become quite collectable in the world of pottery. Thank you for looking..... see my other entries .... hotairfan

Here's a link to everything you could want to know about face jugs,
      http://video.pbs.org/video/1918318256/
Very nice piece, any mark on the bottom?
The most famous of these were made by Lanier Meaders, who's info can be found here,
      http://www.folkpottery.com/lanier/lanier.htm
This is more likely a more recently created piece, made in the last 40 years.
Very nice piece of folk art!!

I love these face jugs. I did not know that they were originally made by slaves. I see them now on pottery sights and hope to one day own one. An antique would be awesome. But, I'd settle for a reproduction. thanks for sharing the picture and the info! My brother was an artist and made something similar. Perhaps it was based on these. I will post it.
