These figural items main purpose was to support the walls of brick buildings. Displayed on the exterior walls in the attic area and sometimes between the floors of a large commercial building, they were the end caps of long steel rods that ran the width of the building, or, sometimes they were short rods bolted to the structure's wooden beams. In either case, their main purpose was to support the walls.
As you travel from county to county (especially in rural PA), you will find that each area has their own pattern. This individualism has made them a collectable architectural item. I have also found them in hand forged serpentine shapes as well as large letters.
