A postcard showing one of the great interiors views of the Palace of Versailles. During the Ancien Régime this section of the palace housed five Royal apartments for the royal family ( les Enfants de France) built around 1681. But in 1830 two floors were deconstructed to make a gallery celebrating the military history of France by order of King Louis-Philippe.
The gallery was redesigned in this format by the architects Fontaine and Nepveu from 1834 to 1837. It was solemnly opened by the King on June 10, 1837.
The gallery contains 35 huge paintings of famous battles and 48 busts of military figures that create a pictorial time-line that stretches from the creation of the French monarchy by Clovis in 496 until the Batttle of Wagram in 1809. The paintings are not 'great' paintings in terms of Art history but there are a couple that are considered 'significant'.
The gallery is 120 metres long and in the photo here to the right is the Bataille de Rocroi by François Joseph Heim (1787–1865) and on the left is the Battle of Denain by : Jean Alaux known as Le Romain (1786–1864).
This is a postcard published by N.D. Phot No. 5: Neurdein et Cie (1860’s-1919) Paris, France.
That vaulted ceiling is extraordinary. Are they skylights at the top?
I am not sure about that Karen! I will have a look. But the ceiling has become the basis for some great T-shirt designs:

and it was used in these extraordinary installations by JOANA VASCONCELOS!

Nice! I have a postcard of the same hall that I bought in Paris. It's a slightly different angle and has some color to it. Sorry, I'm new to this so I don't know the terminology. It's postmarked and dated 1905.
There are coloured and uncoloured versions.
You can look them up on the net.
