I purchased this old deck of 52 cards but have never seen anything like this before. Is there anyone out there who can give me some information on what I have. The aces depict castles (I think) and there are no numbers or symbols on any of the cards except the Queen of Clubs which I have a close up above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is a lovely deck. If you google Neckarsteinach you see it is a town in Germany which has four castles. This deck was probably manufactured about 1890 in either Germany or Belgium. I have no idea of the symbol.
Thank you so much for the information.. it has been very helpful!!
The symbol is the company logo of the Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkartenfabriken A.G. from Stralsund, Germany. I would date the deck a little earlier, c1885. This type of pattern of the courts was used with different sets of aces. Your set of aces is not that often seen in combination with this type of pattern. Please compare with: http://www.dxpo-playingcards.com/xpo/oldschool/oldschool09.htm The deck is complete with 52 cards, no joker was ever issued with it. Nice find!
Best regards,
Joop
