This Gold Scorpion pendant, brooch was probably made between 1900-1920, I think it's Edwardian because of the hinge and clasp.
The eyes are set with tiny Rubies and 9 Opals along the body and claw arms and set in rose coloured gold. The body looks handmade, it as no hallmarks but as been tested 14ct gold.
It measures approx 5.8cm by 2.5 cm, so is quite large, and weighs 3.7 grams.
    Thank you for looking.

      He is very beautiful!
Most are set with moonstones, Google image for scorpion moonstone antique brooch.
I think they come from Colombo in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), I
Saw some in Colombo airport shops during a travel.
    2. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
Hi Kyra thanks for your lovely comment. I did think there was a mixture with Moonstones and Opal. The brooch-pendant do you think it's Edwardian?
    3. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
I'm also going to Sri Lanka for the first time in Febuary 2015, I'm really looking forward to the culture and of course beaches.
    4. kyratango kyratango, 10 years ago
      Hi Pease!
Thin it is a bit later due to thin pin and articulation of it.
For my eye, there are only crystal opals (almost transparent, you could read through them).
How lucky to go to Sri Lanka! I had only a one hour stop at the airport on way to New Caledonia in 1980...
    5. kyratango kyratango, 10 years ago
Oops. Think later, not thin thin later :)

Hi Kyra I was having a look at the google website you gave me, there are a lot of similar Scorpions. Very interesting that they were so popular.

Many thanks to shareurpassion, racer and Manikin for your lovely comments.
    11. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
After looking for many a hour, I do believe these stones are opals, you can't always capture the true colours on camera.

Yep, crystal opals, not moonstones! Try to photograph on a black back ground !
    15. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
Hi Kyra, I've taken this one outside, it's difficult to get the colours.
    16. kyratango kyratango, 10 years ago
Even though, can see they are beautiful and colorful :-)
    17. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
So do you think they are crystal opals?
    18. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
I know you said that from the above statement, but with taking the photo on a black background I thought you might have changed your mind.

I asked my jeweller the name of these Opals, he said they were fresh water Opals, which leads me to believe they are the same has Crystal Opals.
    22. kyratango kyratango, 10 years ago
Black back ground enhance crystal opals colour, that's why I suggested to photograph on black.
Never heard about fresh water opals...
    23. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
The jewellery I spoke to had never heard of Crystal Opals, he said that may be they were the same, but he used the old name for them.
    24. kyratango kyratango, 10 years ago
      http://geology.com/gemstones/opal/crystal-opal.shtml

Nothing but mix of freshwater pearls and opal jewellery on the internet for his appellation.

NoT just because I'm a Scorpio do I love this ... I may be in Colombo in late march 2015 ! will be in Cochi Kerala India at the beginning of march ...worth going there if you are just down the road in Sri Lanka :)
    30. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
Many thanks ozmarty for comment and love. Unfortunately I shall only be going to Sri Lanka in Feb. The last to years I've been to India and visited the Taj, Delhi, Mumbai and Goa. In future years may be Southern India will be on my agenda.
    31. ozmarty ozmarty, 10 years ago
Hi Peasejean55 , I went to India for first time this year and loved it.... only to Kerala so far as that is where my dentist is !
This march I hope to see some more of the south and some Tamil Nadu and if possible some Sri Lanka ( after finishing my dental work ....)
    32. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
Yes India is such a interesting Country, I would love to go back and travel over to Kalicuta and down to the southern states.
I'm going with friends to Sri Lanka for two weeks the place we are staying is about a hour away from Colombo, it's near the beach. I hope to see some of the country and culture instead of staying at the coast, I live in the Costa Del Sol so it's nice to see other terrains I shall let you know what I think
One good thing is we only have to pay about 10pounds for a wafer to enter Sri Lanka, in India this year I had to pay over a 100 Pounds for a 6 months visa.

Oh dear, I've been looking at my Scorpion, and it only has 6 legs instead of 8.
    40. katherinescollections katherinescollections, 10 years ago
Is it supposed to have 8 legs? Looks like a scorpion to me. :)
    41. kyratango kyratango, 10 years ago
Oh! Right, I didn't notice till you said it, only visible from the back...
Even if not anatomicaly correct, he is still a cute guy!
    42. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
It's a Scorpian with 6 legs, lol. I've just looked it up and Wikipeda says Scorpians have 8 legs, oh dilemma. Thanks for your comment katherinescollections.
    43. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
I didn't realise that Spider and Scorpians are from the same family
