We found this buried in the soil in a garden in an old home in Piedmont, CA today. it was about 3 ft underground. it appears to be solid bronze and very heavy. it's missing the upper hand. The hands were cast separately and attached. we found one hand, but the other is missing. it is signed, but i can't read it. can anyone else? i think that the piece is Japanese, but not sure.
i think that this is meiji, no?
Be sure to rub his belly 3 times every day for luck.
Amazing it was burried! Perhaps filled with gold!
Awesome find! He's a quality Buddha.
This is an incredible find ho2 :) The archeological aspect must have been thrilling for you. I'm with jwendell222 I'd comb every inch of the site in search of the missing pieces. Awesome !
WOW! How tall and weight!! If I may ask! Beautiful!!
Hi 7 lucky Gods, Japanese http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/93130-japanese-7-lucky-gods-celluloid-vinta
thank you fortapache, kyratango, jwendell222, racer4four, mikelv85, and toracat! the figure stands about 14" tall, not counting the missing hand. we'll go back and look, but we looked pretty well and couldn't find it. i found some online, but all more recent ones which didn't have the separate hands. isn't that a sign of age or something? it weighs a whole lot!
i read that the sack is a sack of flower he stood on. it was found separated from the sack, and we just glued it on there temporarily to get some photos. not sure how to attach it.
here's one which shows him with a fan in his upper hand. it was done in only one color whereas mine was done in two different patinas. http://www.orientaltreasurebox.com/item.php?id=1301&cat_id=23
Incredible find. I would be careful what you do to it. I is quite possibly very valuable. I would certainly suggest a continued hunt for missing hand, but also go to Bonhams or other auction houses to get an appraisal. Good Luck, Kirk
Thank you Kirk. i'm not positive, but i think that the condition of this precludes much value, unfortunately.
i don't know if i mentioned, but this is SOLID bronze - not a hollow cast or anything. it weighs around 60-70 lbs.
I am totally fall'in for this guy!
