I got this one f0r practically nothing. It was pretty ratty looking (inside and out) and was about to be thrown away by a friend. But, with a little work I was able to bring it back to life again. Had to replace a small strip of wood in the back, some of the metal binding on the back and I had to use leather shims under the hinges. I do know that at one time it was paper covered (traces of the paper covering was still there before I stripped it). I'm not sure of it's age or origin (Civil war period perhaps?). Nothing special, but I just thought it was a very cool looking trunk. The latching mechanisms are very unusual (spring loaded release). I cleaned it out and relined it.We use it to store our sweaters in. Anyone have any information on it's age or origin?

Update: Thanks to our CW friend Jim, of hmsantiquetrunks, our mystery has been solved. This trunk was manufactured somewhere in the 1875-1880 period.

    Thanks for looking!!
    Scott

Thanks CindB!! My friend was storing old paint cans in it, and it was really nasty inside. I'll have to post the pics of the before and after interior sometime.

Many thanks blunderbuss2!! It was actually one of my easier and gratifying restorations. Check out the interior in one of my later post. Thanks for the comment.

Nice trunk Scott. Many people make mistakes about trunk age because of the style of the lock. This style of lock was used into the 1900's on the less expensive Packing Trunks. The latches on your trunk were patented in 1875, so your trunk would be no older than that.

Thanks Jim!! I wasn't sure of the age. But, I hated to see to see another good trunk go into the scrap pile.

Caperkid, Thank you for the kind comment and for stopping by. This one now belongs to one of my sisters. I hated to see it go, but I can't keep them all.

Scott, there are probably many people on CW who pray I don't "stop by". LOL!
You poor people are stuck with me for now, as I can't seem to get rid of this infection after that accident.
    18. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
BB2, You're always welcome here my friend!! I hope you knock that infection out before the holidays.

Scott, maybe going to St. Thomas to get on a "cocktail drip" next week. Arranged to swap apartments with an ex who wants to visit friends here. While she is messing-up my place, I will be in the hospital there! Life just isn't fair. LOL!

Nice!! I got you CL link for the wicker trunk. That one was in amazing condition, short of the interior stripped out. But, really great price!
