This is my Portfolio Sole Leather trunk. I'm not quite sure of the age of this one. Though the patent date is December 20, 1869, it was more than likely made years later. Sole leather trunks were made only until 1910, so this would have been made well before 1910.
It's nearly 100% complete, including both handles, which are in beautiful condition. It's bound with copper rivets, which I thought was very cool. I've always thought the interior was pretty awesome looking. When you drop down the section inside the lid, it has red striping over the steel spring bands. It has a very heavy brass Excelsior lock and key. It was evidently a well taken care of trunk by it's original owner. I see a lot of these Sole Leather trunks that are in such irrecoverable condition. I got lucky on this one.
The exterior was very dirty when I got it a couple of years ago. So, I cleaned it with glycerin saddle soap and conditioned the leather, polished the copper rivets and the brass pieces. I did replace the lid lift and leather straps (original buckles though).
Thanks for looking!!
Scott
You did get lucky ,this is in fantastic condition,Love the ladies inside.
Thanks for the treat.
Thanks Drill!! Got it for under $100!! She is most definitely a treasure indeed!!
Thanks again for the nice comment.
All of your wonderful trunks are fortunate to be in such capable and caring hands.
Many thanks for the nice comment racer4four! Just trying to preserve a piece of our history. I'm sure I speak for us all when I say I hate to see a nice trunk mishandled.
Thanks CindB!! I'm fairly partial to this one too.
I'm lovin all your trunks but I think this ones my fav... Where do you keep them all? Does each room in your house have it's own trunk?
Thanks toolate2 for the kind comment!! I'm unable to keep them all (but would love to). I only keep the ones that are hard to find or in rare form. Yes, every room in my house has it's own trunk and some have two trunks. But, the wife is ready for me to start unloading some of those. I'm just not ready to let them go quite yet.
Thanks for the loves everyone!!
I really like this one too!...the images remind me the portraits you see on some Bohemian glass...:-)

Oh wow! You're absolutely right! I never knew that until I opened the link. Not sure if there is any truth to it or not, but word has it that General Custer owned a Portfolio Sole Leather trunk nearly identical to this one. Though, he was known to be a very conceited person. Thanks for the link and the kind comment Penny:)
I have been searching the internet for about 6 months now and this is the cleanest most well preserved portfolio trunk I have seen. Absolutely stunning.
Thank you JonB!! It wasn't that way when I got her. It took a lot of saddle soap and conditioning. The interior on this one is untouched. If I must say so myself, this one does have one of the most beautiful interiors that I have seen on a sole leather trunk. Thanks very much for the kind comment!!

jscott0363 ....I am curious what your label says. Great job and trunk!! The interior IS excellent!!
Hi Im4anythingOld!
Thanks very much!! The label reads Portfolio and the top of the trunk is embossed with the phrase "Warranted Sole Leather". I currently have 90% of my trunks and collectibles in climate controlled storage, so I don't have it close by to read the exact label. I just know it does read Portfolio.
Thanks for the reply jscott0363 ... climate controlled ... hmmmm?... Judging by your collection I had assumed you must have some good money behind you as it is stunning from all angles.. and now climate controlled!! Yup , we have here for sure now, a Daddy Big Bucks!! with an antique mental glitch..lol!! I wouldn't be surprised if on your death bed, your last words uttered would come to be ..."Rosebud" Thanks again!
Im4anythingOld,
Lol!! I'm far from Daddy Big Bucks:) I'm just passionate about my collecting. Believe it or not, the climate controlled storage is only about $110 per month for a 10 X 15 and so well worth it.
Thanks so very much for te loves, comments and for stopping in,
