Looking through old boxes some time ago at my grandparent's cabin, I came across this. It is dated August 13th, and I am assuming the year is 1943. I gave this to my mother as a keepsake of the way her parents were at one point, a long time ago. I have never seen this side of my grandfather...it is pretty sappy at times!. He talks about going to football games with his wife when he gets home. It is also a sign of the times as he makes reference to how generous "Tojo" is with the stationary. He signed it "Cotton", which I have always liked. Being 100% Swedish, my grandfather was and is very fair skinned. Once he got out in the sweltering heat of the South Pacific, his blonde hair turned white as a ball of cotton. So his shipmates nicknamed him Cotton. It has always struck me as odd how the front of the postcard depicts a bloody war scene. That couldn't have been very comforting to my grandmother.
