Sometimes in the bins of broken sunglasses and mismatched gloves at Goodwill I find the strangest (and cutest) things. This week it was a teensy little Kewpie doll - just over four inches tall. It looks like his arms were held in with elastic, which has deteriorated at this point.

Does anyone know what era this would be from? Also, would this little fella have originally been wearing clothes?

It looks to be high-quality, and only has a couple of tiny fleabites. There aren't any markings (just a few rough lines on the feet) and something that looks like O/C inside the right arm joint.

Look at that mischievous little face!

Hi Hunter she looks authentic without holding her . The marks on her feet would read O'Neill just not clear it could be she was a mold ready to retire from using it a lot and leaving the mark unclear . The bisque look right for era 1913-30 's. The painting is correct . If I could feel the bisque I would confirm it but I say the real deal ! Nice find and nice to see you too !!!

Thanks for all the info Mani! Comparing the faint vertical lines on the feet to the mark on this doll, it does seem to be a well-used mold (reading "ONEILL": http://www.rubylane.com/item/168166-NB177/Rose-Ox27Neill-Kewpie-Doll-Germany-Bisque

The bisque feels right to me, not slick at all, and the paint job is excellent. Now about fixing those elastic arms.... :)

The elastic is easy to fix if you have thin elastic cord and a clamp . Just send her to me lol . A rubber band will work on a pinch but has to be very small and strong as you will need it to retract back into body after stretching it to go into loop that only works if bottom of loop on arm is open . Is the loop on arm closed or open ? I am sure she is marked correct and you got a good deal too !

Yeah! 50 cents ain't too shabby. :) I think both the loops are closed (you mean the little porcelain circle shapes in the joint on the arms?), but I'll ahve to look again tonite. I definitely have some elastic in my sewing goodies, so I'll try and fix this baby up over Thanksgiving. Thanks for the tips Mani!

If it has only a closed hole then take a short piece of elastic cord and stretch it across chest to see how long fold it double when you measure . Loop it through one arm then through body folded . Now that hard part you need to stretch it and tie it after you put through other arm . I use a clamp to hold it tight until I can knot it tight and then release so arm will be tight to body ,tuck the knot into doll . Good luck :-)

You're welcome Hunter...suggestion use a small rubber band, can loop in one eye and use piece of paper clip for hook on other end
