Hi everyone, I am cleaning out my mom's house and found this little guy. Anyone know anything about the maker of this. Only marking is the Germany on his back. Is about 4 1/2 inches tall. Appears to be ceramic. I have found pictures of similar dolls but not this one. Thought he was a neat little kewpie! any info would be appreciated.

Hi your cute doll is called a " Kewpie Type " Many German companies made several variations to Rosie O'Neill's Kewpie doll but not exactly like her's . Most companies did not mark their names on these dolls except Kestner which Rosie had make some for her . Yours does not have wings on back , no fish hand and hair , These were take offs of The original Kewpie and were often given as Fair prizes and novelty dolls. It dates 1920-1930 and is Very nice little doll .

Could it be a German Happifat doll? So adorable.

No it is not a Happifat doll :-) They are very fat ! and do not look anything like this doll .

I just recently brought a very similar doll that was sold to me by an antique dealer as a 'Kewpie Doll'. I had to rush off to work after i paid and didnt find out anything about her. So i started searching in the net and couldn't find one that looked like mine..... Until now although, mine is a girl, she has worn blushed checks, no stamp on her what so ever, i was praying it wasn't a fake but now i fear it is :(

This doll is not a fake it is a true vintage doll so if yours is just like it not fake just a kewpie type . Kewpie got the name from( Rosie O'Neill) ,Rose Cecil O'Neill was an American illustrator, artist, and writer who created the popular comic characters, Kewpies character always had blue wings and top notch hair .
These kewpie type dolls do not sell high so hope you didn't pay a lot but do enjoy it if you like him and display him :-)
Their are reproduction Kewpies on market of bisque so be aware often made in a doll making class where they used old molds and you would buy blank and paint it and they fired it . These dolls are always to be signed and dated by person hat painted it and year so not to imply it is a antique as often the feet on a Rosie O'Neill doll where marked with her name and that would still be on old mold it was made from . A true antique bisque doll has a several ways to tell by bisque used and the painting . Also newer ones that were authorized to sell them as Kewpies made of vinyl .
