This finally puts it all together! This Flying A gas sign is the West Coast design and was likely made in the late 30s. JP Getty bought out Associated Gas company in the 30s and somehow got to use the Tidewater Oil Co of NY trademark of Flying A to market his gasoline. In the East it sold as Tydol Flying A and in the West we called it Associated Flying A. In any event the sign is pretty rare and desirable and fits perfectly under the rare and desirable P-51 Mustang. It was during WWII that the US govt put bids out to gas producers to increase the octane of their fuels so the aircraft and high performance military vehicles could use the gas. That caused the birth of a few new gas companies like MALCO in NM who was started by a young enterprising entrapaneur in his twenties who had a dream and made it come true. America used to be the favored place for dreamers and visionaries who believed they could make their dreams come true. Big taxes, govt imposition and controls along with EPA "out of controls" are taking a lot of the air out of the sails of today's dreamers. Don't give up as this is America and we can change Washington with the cast of a vote! Just remember the counsel that I received from an elderly lady on the beach in Tahiti, who just happend to have retired from being the Speaker of the House in her State of Washington, she advised me to be careful when suggesting any legislation as "all legislation has a positive side and a negative side". Depends on which side you might be looking from!!! Good counsel!!! Let's learn from the past and create a better future. These old signs, cars, planes and gas pumps help us remember. What will you do with your memories is the question?
Great post and I like the quote as well!
As for me, I will pass my memories on to the next generation! (Let's see what they do with it!)
