I saved this armchair from going to the dump when one of my neighbours was tossing it out. It appears to be fairly old, definitely well-worn, and has springs and horsehair in the seat and back.

I'm guessing the style dates it somewhere from the late '20s to '40s. I haven't been able to find any other examples of the style online. I've looked for manufacturing tags or stamps and have found none.

It's a very comfy chair and I'll think I'll try my hand at restoring the wood parts and perhaps upholstering. Several people have suggested it may have been reupholstered in the '70s but the fabric looks very reminiscent of that I recall being on my Grandparent's furniture. Have included a fabric closeup in case anyone can verify if it's original or not.

Does anyone have further information they could provide?

CardinalLady will post something for you to view. I saved a couch & 2 chairs in 1969 from a barn that belonged to a grandfather. Just a thought that it may be Sears from the 40s, but I am interested in what others think! I do believe yours to be original as this one was first velvet something!

Thanks Phil, now if only I could remember where I put my 1930s Sears catalogs! I think I read somewhere that Sears was going to make publicly available online all their old catalogs at some point. Do you know anything about that?

The only Sears catalog I have is a reproduction (reprinted) 1908 one from the '70s. I have some others in PDF format that I acquired via the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/).

I stumbled across a clue today that suggests the style might be referred to as a "club chair". Searches for this have yielded the most promising results so far, but still nothing that that I would say nails it, nor have I managed to find one identical.

There's lots of examples upholstered in leather that look mighty fine!
