I purchased this item at a yard sale. It is made of solid brass, and what I call red brass (as opposed to yellow brass) due to the higher copper/zinc ratio. It is very heavy and there seems to be some extra weight in the base. It is also quite tall (17") relative to its base diameter (4.5")
There's no maker marks on it and I suspect it was designed for use in a boat due to posts extending from the sides (mid-line on the oil reservoir) which I'm thinking were for mounting on a gimbal bracket. It would be a nice find to happen across the bracket sometime in the future.
If anyone can provide more information on manufacturer and age that would be great!
