This poor thing is a sad example of what can happen to a steamer trunk if it's left outside for too long. I picked it off the curb before garbage day and it was all I could do to keep it from falling apart as I loaded it into the vehicle.

I took it apart as best I could to salvage what metal was still usable - most of the metal strapping was just rust dust but the corners, hinges, and clasps might still be okay. Perhaps I'll build a new trunk out of the parts or use them for other projects.

Let this serve as a prime example of what happens if you don't take proper care of your stuff!

I get it, but just don't p.u. stuff like this anymore...mostly anyway! The sad thing is it's condition and how someone could let that happen. The BAD thing is the mold!!! You must be careful of it, it really can kill you if it gets in your lungs! Be careful. This is just too infested with the mold!

I live in the rain forest and here we encounter (and deal with, and respect) mold all the time - but I hear ya loud-and-clear and take your cautions to heart! The wood ended up in the backyard burn barrel along with a lot of other moldy and ant/termite-infested salvaged lumber last summer that had sat around for too long under the tarps.
