These trawler lamps are mostly reproductions of the originals from the 19th century and are still quite popular in boat galleys. They use kerosene and put out quite a bit of light (equivalent to a 30W bulb) thanks to the round wick and the burner configuration.
They are crazy expensive ($200-$300) on the used market and I really don't know why they cost so much - maybe it's a supply and demand thing. They're made in Holland and I wouldn't say that the quality of build and brass is all that special.
That said, I've always wanted one and so I jumped at the chance when I saw one for sale on a local Buy & Sell website for $60. It's not in mint condition, showing some brass pitting and lots of scratches. No dents though. They're larger than they appear, measuring about 10" wide and 17.5" tall.
It's nice to have this one but I likely wouldn't buy another. Maybe I'll reconsider that during the next power outage!
Wonderful brass design!
