Living in PA Amish country, I often find items that they made to help them in their daily chores. I believe this to be one of those items.
It is a very primitive tool, but quite functional in it's design. I was told that it was used to chop horse radish, but I can't see why it couldn't be used to chop meat or other food items.
I don't know it's age, nothing to reference it to, as with most early Amish tools.
I is held together with hand made nails and locked together with a hand forged hook.
Primitives like this are my favorite items to collect. The fact that they were home made and the fact that they showed the ingenuity of our early American forefathers to help them in their every day routine. .........hotairfan

I live near Freehold, NJ. I go out to Lancaster area quite often to pick. Can you recommend any good auctions to find high end American antiques?

Hi BHock45, Horst weekly auctions in Ephrata often have high end items I was there yesterday and had my sights on an early cast iron pull toy airplane with "LINDY" in raised letters on the wing. As the wheels rotated, the prop also rotated and made a popping noise. It was in great shape and I believe it to be original. The wind came out of my bidding sail when it rapidly rose to the Plus $700 mark. There are a lot of other interesting and high end items that come up there, check it out.
      PS. also check out http://WWW.AUCTIONZIP.COM
All upcoming auctions across the country are on there. You enter by date and distance from your email address. Since I use auction zip, I don't even look at the news paper ads. They even have photos of the items at each sale. All the Auctioneers use it (including myself) because it's free to list on.
