Here we have a very interesting piece, a simple William IV silver topped perfume or scent bottle. Of rectangular form with scroll engraving to the silver. What makes this piece interesting is the maker.
The hallmarks are William IV head an A for 1836 & SM.GR for Sampson Mordan & Gabriel Riddle, these two prominent silversmiths first joined forces in 1823 and produced a fine selection of pens & pencils.
Mordan and Riddle parted company in 1837 and Mordan continued with greater prominence and success. During this 13 year period many pencils & pens were produced, there are only four pieces of silver that I have been able to identified as by Mordan & Riddle that are NOT pens or pencils. A snuff box, a candlestick and an etui. And now this piece.
