Found this old box last week. I like it. Looks old, the dealer claimed it was early 18th century. But it isn't too common to run across something from 1715 for 20 bucks. I would have to guess later, but I don't know how much. All we have to go by is the hardware, and that is not easy. Clearly, however, it is old. Enjoy it
What a great find! The nail heads to me look uneven, suggesting hand made nails, which would place this in the possible mid to late 1700's -- style and construction to me would also suggest this... hope those in deeper knowledge base see it and comment. Everything about this seems entirely hand made. Fabulous!!!
Hey trunkman, thanks for chiming in. When I bought it there wasn't even a price tag on it yet. Meaning it probably just came in the door, and very few people saw it before me. I agree it looks pre-1800. I think it was a bargain. There is only one problem. I can't get it open. Take care man.
thanks trunkman and jewels for the loves.
Hi
BHock45
Trumkman was right, uneven nail mean great possible date, all made one at the time.
I know its maybe early but if you try to test those nail, try to find one loose, and pull it out, if the nail was four side and pointed(not cut) well you got your answer, mid 17?? ,You already know this trick, don't you.
I will soon post a trunk with no top cover, but this piece was from that time period, coming from a boat.I think you gone love it, anyway.
I really love what you found.
Thanks for sharing

What a really GREAT find!! I don't get much better than this.
TYPO: It don't get much better than this!!!
hey jscott....yeah, I couldn't believe it. The guy said straight up, "this box is from the early 18th century, 20 bucks"
I am thinking this is an 18th century liquor carrying chest. Similar ones are found in George C. Neumann's book, "Early American Antique Country Furnishings". This differs in that it is slightly smaller, and it has the handle on the top. If I could get it open without damaging it, it could have the trays inside as well.
