These were given to my grandparents by a chinese lady. The story goes this lady fled China just before the revolution in the 1930's and lived on the jewelry she was able to carry. Not sure what these are for or how to tell how old they are either. They measure roughly 2" x 1 5/8" x 1/2". The two halves are different on the back. When I put them together they mate like they belong back-to-back.
This seems to be very high quality, mutton fat nephrite jade, would say Qing dynasty, google images for more.
They were perhaps intended to be mount together as a box or pendant pomander (to hold perfume)
