I found this at an estate sale in an incredible home one block from the beach in Margate, NJ. For those of you who know Margate, you know why I wanted to get to this sale. Luckily I was at a teacher's conference in Atlantic City, NJ. Instead of eating lunch guess where I went?????

I found this round box which has some age to it. Looks like the original handle is missing, but the "box" is in good condition. I wanted to see what kinds of nails they used to tack in. To my surpriser under 10X magnification I could see the tiny wooden pegs, everywhere. Of course so newer nails were added later.

    Unsolved Mystery

jewels thanks for kind words. Alan thank you for your comment as well. I was just saying it looks like newer nails were sunk to help it stay together but I am guessing. What is this called and what was it actually used for? Grain storage?

      Pantry box? Firkin?

I have to agree with Jewels, possibly a Firkin. Original shakers were maple, usually finger jointed and held together with brass tacks.
