The gauges you show were used to measure wear on brake rigging under frt cars. Brake beam hangars differed in size depending on the capacity of the car loading weight. I have actually used this type of gauge many years ago when working as a car mechanic. If the piece being measured would not fit in the notch it was supposed to it was "good" meaning it had not worn sufficiently to be replaced. It it would go into the notch, it should be replaced as it was sufficiently worn enough to "take the gauge."
