At a summer yard sale I purchased a bag of pocket watch cases for $7. When I got home and was examining the lot I found that it also contained a fully functioning pocket watch. I felt like I had found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Except it wasn't to be...
The watch has an internal alarm bell, on which is inscribed: Swiss Made; Brevet 227383. On the inside of the lid is written: Cesar Renfer-Abrecht Swiss. On the dial is the name "Montreluxe".
A quick search revealed to my dismay that these watches in their day were similar to Dollar-Store watches today. It uses a cheap 1-jewel pin lever movement and according to many wouldn't be worth fixing if it were broken.
Fortunately mine is still working (and keeps good time!), may be gold-plated (if I'm to believe some of what I read) but is also just as likely to be brass. It's 2" in diameter and has a nice weight and feel to it.
So it's not going to pay off my mortgage nor be a retirement fund but I'm still happy to have a working antique pocket watch, and the bag of nifty pocket watch cases is a bonus!
