I bought this barrel stave trunk about 5 years ago at a local auction house and refinished it about 4 years ago. It was once paper covered and looked pretty rough, but, was in good solid condition. Check out the front. That's one solid board. They don't have pine (basswood perhaps?) lumber that wide today.
The tray is missing, which they usually are. I ended up cedar lining it to store our wool blankets and sweaters in. I do not know the age of this, but I'm guessing around the 1870's or early 1880's. Perhaps someone out there may be able to put a better date on this one.
AAAARRRRRRRR!!!!
ME OLE TREASURE CHEST !!! ;-) lol
great job , love it ..
Thanks surfdub66!! I've always thought it had that treasure chest appearance to it. It's solid enough to pass as one anyway!!
Shame it wasn't full of treasure when u bought it !! ;-)
Hi
jscott0363
Wow, stunning job.
I love it, how long it take for the restoration?

No treasure (unless you want to call mice nests treasure!!). I never seem to find anything of value in any of the trunks I buy. A cousin of mine bought a trunk for $10 at an auction. The trunk was locked. But, when he got it open he found it full of women's clothing and shoes from the 19th century. They were able to salvage most of it ( some of the lace fell apart when the touched it) and got well over $500 for all of it on ebay!!
Thanks very much Alan!! This one took about 2 weeks (off and on again) to complete from beginning to end.
Thanks again!!
Scott

Thank you Trunkman!! Very kind comment!!
Wow!! Thank you Cindy!! Always look twice at any old trunk. There are a lot of real treasures out there that get passed on or even thrown away. I truly enjoy doing the restorations, when I'm not working. There just doesn't seem to be enough time for me anymore!!
Thanks very much for the kind comment!!
