looks like a Mexican made serape/blanket/rug
This is a Chimayo rug.
Chimayo weaving takes its name from the village of Chimayo, New Mexico, which was settled in the late 1600's by the Spanish. They brought their European looms and weaving techniques with them, and the area around Chimayo, in the northern Rio Grand Valley, became a weaving center of the Southwest. The weavers are all of Hispanic descent, many of them tracing their family history back to eight or more generations of weavers.
Chimayo weaving is Hispanic, but it is not Mexican, and definitely not Native American. It is considered part of the Spanish Colonial Art heritage of Northern New Mexico.
Thank you, Canyon Road. I appreciate your insight!
Most likely they were. I made that trip myself in 1965 on a BSA motorcycle. I'll never forget it. I drove from NY to Corona, California, where I had a summer job at Evans Products Company. They manufactured pre-finished plywood panels there for mobile homes and houses.
