This is a Jenny Lind style smaller piece that was carried along with a full-sized trunk. It is 17 x 12 x 8.5 inches. It is covered in tooled leather with metal bands and brass studs. It has a brass lock and still has the brass lock cover. It also has the original leather handles and straps with buckles. It dates to the 1860s or 1870s. The inside still has some of the original paper. I bought this in an antique store in West Virginia. I've cleaned it up and polished the metal. Right now, I'm planning to leave the interior as it is. It looks nice sitting in front of my leather covered Jenny Lind trunk!

Very nice myoldkyhome!! Beautiful condition!! My cousin in Loretto has one just like it, only his handles are missing (which they usually seem to be). Yours is in remarkable condition!! What a prize!! I love this one and it's a really nice size as well. What a great find!

      Thanks drill, trunkman and jscott0363.
Hey jscott0363, is your cousin the man who has a trunk restoring business just down the road from Maker's Mark?

Yes, it is. But, he's 72 and in very poor health now and doesn't do much of anything with trunks anymore. He's actually talking about selling out everything in his shop and he has a lot of trunks in there!! I'd buy it, but I just don't have the space for it (plus, my wife would probably throw a fit!!).

I'll be glad to put you in touch with him, or take you over there. He has some really rare and amazing trunks in his house. And most are for sale.

jscott0363 I talked to him on the phone a couple of years ago and kept meaning to go over there but never did. I probably wouldn't buy anything else right now because my house is full! I would like to see his collection sometime though, if he didn't mind. I think that I lost his number and name.

His name is Donnie Medley (270) 865-3049. Donnie loves to show off his trunk collection and he's has a very nice collection of trunks and an extensive collection of Indian artifacts. Just tell him Scott Thompson sent you. He's also the one responsible for getting me interested in trunks several years ago.

Thanks Scott!! That's even better that he has Indian artifacts. I have some Indian baskets and pottery myself. Sounds like an interesting man. I'll try to get in touch with him after the holidays.

Hey, myoldkyhome, that is a Beauty! Were they sold as a set or just 2 of same style? Really nice post! Thanks.

Thanks trunkingforfun! I believe that originally the valise was sold as a separate item entirely. So, you might have any style of trunk and then you would buy this valise to carry smaller items. It was probably more like a toiletry bag that we would carry now, but their luggage wasn't necessarily a matched set like we usually have now.

Hi. I used to own this trunk! I lived in Beckley, WV, and do to financial circumstances I had to sell at far below prices my entire 200 plus trunk collection and an antique store was one of the buyers of a number of my trunks. Glad to see it found a good home!
