This clock belonged to my maternal grandparents. I found it in one of the sheds during my week-long summer stay as a kid and spent a lot of time taking it apart, cleaning and oiling it (with sewing machine oil - oops!) and managed to get it ticking again so it was given to me.
If I recall the story of its origin correctly, it was a wedding gift to my grandparents in 1937 - the same year as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (hence the tattered commemoration decal on the face).
Unfortunately at some point in its travels (after I owned it) it took a bit of a tumble and the tile broke. I fixed it with ceramic glue but of course the crack line still shows. I've always regretted that day and the damage to this piece of family history.
The tile face measures 9.75" square; it's 2-3/8" deep (including the 5.25" diameter clockwork housing). As far as I know the key is original.
The only maker mark is on the back, embossed into the lower right corner of the ceramic tile. It's very difficult to make it out accurately, but I think it reads: 21.1 7 E.
A longitudinal coordinate line? Does anyone know what it means?
