I just acquired this beautiful Sinclair & Co. of London beaver silk top hat and leather covered top hat trunk. The trunk is in really nice condition. You just rarely see one with the handle and lid holder strap still intact. But this one has all of those and I jumped at the opportunity to buy it.

The beaver silk top hat is in near mint condition. I did have to clean the trunk, condition the leather, polish the brass as well as brush and polish the top hat.

I know nothing about this top hat and trunk as I have been unsuccessful at finding anything related to Sinclair & Co. of London on the internet. Going by the style of the top hat and the hat trunk itself, I do believe this would have been made in London around the late 1800's.
If anyone has any information on this, in regards to how old it is and anything about Sinclair & Co., I truly would appreciate it very much!

    Thanks!!
    Scott

Jewels, I'm gonna have to do like Trunkman and Drill and do trunk stack of my own!! But, in my opinion, that's a good thing!! It just means my collection is becoming more and more complete.

I so want it! I've been looking for an affordable top hat for a while - I haven't even come across an unaffordable one... congrats on having a collection of them!

I'm really curious what you paid for something like this; care to divulge? Or put another way: hypothetically speaking, what would one expect to pay for something like this?!

But the most important question of all: does it fit?
    13. jscott0363 jscott0363, 10 years ago
Kydur, Men tended to be a little smaller back in the 1800s than we are today. So, to answer that question, no, the hat is slightly small for me.
I managed to get this one for under $100USD. However, I've seen this exact set, not in near as good of condition, for as much as $400USD or more.
There are some of these out there that are very affordable if you catch them at the right time. So, it has taken me about 3 years just to find the few that I have.

Thanks pops52 and Kydur for the loves!!

Thanks for the info Scott, excellent price - I would've scooped it as well, although it would cost a bit more these days in $CAD.

I'm gonna keep looking and never give up! Although I'll probably also end up trying may hand at making a few of my own from the abundance of patterns available online - that way they'll fit my head as well!

Keep it away from them snowmen this time of year...

Thank you Alan!! Yes, I wish my top hats could talk and tell me their story. I have 2 that were made in London (this being one of them), 3 that were made by Knox Hats in NY and 1 by Collins and Fairbanks of Boston.
I also have a pair of wool spats from London as well. So, there were some very classy folks back in the day.
      Thanks for the kind comment.
      Take care my friend!!

Alan, I'm currently working on a very old Knox Hat trunk that's made of leather. It's pretty old, so it's became quite a task to get it back to good condition again. I'll post it when I've completed it.

Found a patent image for the hasp I believe.

Hope it helps to date it.
    26. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
Very close!!! But, in Figure 2 (item 20) is much different than mine. The item 20 on my hasp is more like a ball that pops into a hole and does not latch until locked with the key.
    27. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
Drill, where do you find these amazing patents and drawings? They're really helpful.
    28. Drill Drill, 9 years ago
Searching trunk patents quite a bit lately, compiling quite a few (around 700 trunk patents so far). So sometimes I come across ones that resemble
locks or trunk hardware that I've seen before. Not all patents have pictures ,but most do. It's fun Hunting for things ,It's my other hobby. There may be improvements on patents as well,or someone else may have one that's a hair off,but copy cats tend to be of around the same time period.
