Christmas is approaching so I thought I’d post the most Christmas-y ceramics I own! Here are two tiles, manufactured at the Kähler Pottery, probably sometime between 1910 and 1920. They are both decorated with the so-called horn-painting technique popular on Kähler pottery at the time: the glaze was applied with a cow's horn with the tip cut off. A quill was attached to the hole and the decorator could adjust the amount of glaze with the quill (see also vetraio's vase with the same technique: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/75593-danico-denmark-sknvirke-vase).

All pieces decorated in this way are unique in a sense because the decoration was never exactly the same. They tiles are quite thick and also have glaze on the sides. They are very nice and decorative items!
It is very likely that the tiles are the work of Jens Thirslund (1892-1942) who favored tiles and experimented with many types of decor and motifs. The tiles were used for tables, fireplaces etc.

Size: 15.5 x 15.5 cm (6.1 x 6.1 in). Mark (only on the blue one): HAK Danmark
