I just refinished an almost identical rocking chair that someone had covered in white paint. The wood appears to be white walnut, which I refinished with a walnut stain. I'm now working on the upholstery and am curious to know whether the seat and the back are upholstered using boards or whether they are both just wrapped and padded fabric. If the back uses a board, could you add a photo showing the back of the chair?
I also purchased this chair ($40) from an estate auction and am guessing that it is early 1900s, or perhaps earlier. I'm new to this site and will try to upload photos.
Hi, I just found this info from another poster on Collector's Weekly. It's called a ''Dexter '' After Hc Dexter Chair co. of Black River, NY. They made chairs from 1838-1920. The values average $150.00 Dollars.
Here's an image collection of these chairs.

Just found a catalog of Dexter rockers, published in 1889 on archive.org. https://archive.org/details/catalogueoffancy00hcde
These platform rockers are more ornate and Victorian style than my later more simple rocker.
