This is a great trench art ashtray from the Korean war I believe. It has a 1 Dehioche Mark, dated 1950 in the center. Ltg W.F. Higgins and what I believe is his serial number on the side. I assume it is from the Korean war because of the date of the coin. Does anyone know anything else about this piece?

      Nice trench art ashtray.

The rank appears to be "LTC" or Lieutenant Colonel.

Hard to say if the piece is WW2 or later. The coin could have been a later addition. The bottom of the shell will give you "no earlier than" dating. WW2 shells were used into the Korean War and even Viet Nam.

Your best bet is to identify the Colonel. With his service number, you should be able to narrow down a time period when he held that rank.

If you post the full service number, I'd be happy to see what I can find out.

I just did a quick search on the name and found this guy (page 13):

      http://www.usarmygermany.com/units/ordnance/68th%20Ord%20Co%20&%20B%20Co%20-%201965-1968%20-%20History%20-%20Plus.pdf

He was the BN CDR of the 66th Maintenance BN in 1966.

Hello, Scott is correct. I am the new owner of it. As a former Army Officer and current Public Safety Bomb Technician, it has found a permanent home and will be proudly used to support my hand rolled cigar habit!
