I attended an auction several years age that had a large assortment of Nautical items collected by the previous owner. These items were not the usual trinkets found in a tourist trap, but were interesting items that were possibly used and made by whaling seamen during their long periods at sea looking for whales.
I found this hand made mermaid hinge that was at the bottom of a box of wrought iron items.
The details in the design and artwork are superbly preserved without rust or damage.
In my imagination, I would like to think that it might have been made for a whaling ships log chest or something, I don't know. Anyway it is really a neat piece and I hope that you enjoy seeing it.
PS. I wish I had the mating other hinge, but you seldom find a pair unless they is fastened to a box or chest. ..... hotairfan
