This is clearly a wool rug. The pattern is difficult to look at ... as it blurs the eyes when looking at it straight on. It is beautiful work but would love to know more about this pattern and who designed it.
The rug is 65" X 34.5"
It has been used as a floor rug and has some wear.
Thanks for any help to identify this beautiful rug!
By the way.... I purchased this at my local Good Will Store in Tucson, Arizona just a few days ago.
A beauty !!!!
very pretty -- how long have you had it and little more details on where you found it might help in the identity -- happy holidays
after looking at several pages of navajo rug patterns -- in my humble opinion it would appear this style of rug is called the eye dazzler or the dazzler -- and it would certainly appear that it is living up to its name as you indicated in your description -- type navajo rug patterns into your browser and click on the rug images and see what you think
oh another goodwill baby -- goodness i am in great company -- takes one to know one i guess
Thanks for the comments! I have looked at the eye dazzler or dazzler rugs and did see simular designs. I don't quite understand the design as it would be difficult for me to hang on my wall or even use as a rug due to the obvious. I have many beautiful Native American Rugs (all purchased at various Thrift Stores in Tucson) and have then hanging proudly on my walls. The work on this rug is gorgeous but I would have difficulty hanging this one. I must find out more about why these rugs were made this way.
Again, thanks for the comments. I am new to this website and helpful hints are always appreciated!
zoie -- check out this website -- they are almost in your backyard -- maybe they could shed some more "light" on your rug

also just for kicks and giggles -- check this one out on ebay -- it kinda reminded me of yours
Vintage 1940's Navajo Indian Kayenta Natural Eye Dazzler Rug 55" x 44"
ebay item no: 221577261586
eye-dazzler!!! love it!
zoie how did the above weblink work for you at the state museum of arizona on this rug
I had already viewed the website before submitting this and noticed the similarity but it doesn't explain the design as visually difficult to look at. The website explains the color and brightness to attract attention for buyers but this design, I believe would not attract people to buy it. It is actually VERY difficult to look at. I have it foldered so I don't have to look at it due to the blurring it creates when you do look at it. Hard to explain. I think I will have to take it to the museum and show someone this rug.
Thanks for all your input! I will keep trying to find out!
well -- i definitely think is it appropriately named -- as the dazzler -- it is almost as if the thing has a spirit that wants to get inside your head and make your eyeballs go goofy
Just went to a "What's It Worth Event" here in Tucson and confirmed with a professional that this is in fact a Navajo Eye Dazzler Rug. She noted that it is very unique and Thanked me for making her Dizzy. Really! LOL
This rug is now posted on my Ebay. Wish me luck and thanks for all the comments!
