This is a 1940's cloth doll made in England (according to the very old sticker on the bottom of her shoe) by A.D. Sutton & Sons, also known as a face mask doll from the era. Her celluloid face was hand painted. Everything about her, with the exception of the red bow I tied around her head, is original, including the mixed bubblegum pink and white hair. As already noted, her body is primarily made of cloth, and her torso and limbs were stuffed with sawdust. I've named her Peppy Mint for her red, pink and white color scheme. I can't get the picture of a starlight mint out of my mind whenever I see her! Peppy is approximately 16" tall.
I picked up Peppy on my birthday last weekend while browsing a local antique shop. I'd originally seen her back in October, but decided I probably didn't need another doll for my collection. (Silly me!) I couldn't get her out of my mind, however, and decided I should probably just give in and get her. I'm very happy I did!
She is so beautiful, and clearly kept as a precious thing.
A wonderful gift to yourself!
Very pretty, love it!! Happy New Year to you and welcome to CW!!
