A vase from Iwata Hisatoshi's Nami (or waves) series.
Iwata Hisatoshi is often called Iwata Kuri by the Japanese. Kuri is Romaji for chestnut(!) but in this context is a term of high respect.
This spherical vase is quite thin walled and made of blue glass with white and gold streaks to represent waves. The lip and base have been hot finished.
The base has a sticker from 1988 that I recall was to celebrate Asahi's 100th anniversary. Interestingly a lot of Japanese art glass has been used as corporate gifts, and fortunately this one still has the sticker which has helped date the glass.
This design is quite late in Iwata Kuri's design period, as he died in 1994 aged 69.
Height and width 16.5cm (6.5in)
