here's some pictures of our huge carved oak tree. We had a local tree carver come and put two faces into the tree. My wife wanted the 7 dwarfs but the artist said he had to carv what the tree presented to him. Typical artist. We love it. We have a lot of folks that stop and ask if they can take pictures of it.

    Hope you like em to.

DrFluffy may remember the line of trees along 15th Street (as I recall) which a local had carved into religious icons. Don't know if they are still there, and I can't find a reference on Google. They were amazing, I recall a story about them on television, and in the newspaper, this was back in the 70s, possibly earlier.

How long ago was this done? Over time won't the tree "scab" them over??
    5. doynger69 doynger69, 10 years ago
It was done about 5 years ago. I have to put a heavy coat of polyurethane on them each spring to keep them from turning gray. The carver said they will scab over after several years but as they start to do that just trim it back and it will be fine.

Cool, I'm surpriced that the trees survives this.
    10. doynger69 doynger69, 10 years ago
As long as the carving doesn't go more than half way around the tree it survives just fine.

I think the succsess might have to do with the climate maybe. Here we normaly we have very dry and cold winters and I think a tree would dry out and dig here. We have to avoid cutting back trees and bushes in the garden too late in autumn because of this. Cool that it works for you!

it's should say 'dry out and die'
    14. doynger69 doynger69, 10 years ago
The guy that carved them said you can do it to any tree anywhere. You just can't carve more than half way around the tree as that will kill it. The tree begins to heal itself as soon as the carvings are done but the carvings are so deep it will take many, many years to grow back in. If I don't want that to happen I just need to trim the edges where they are growing back.

Hm, I'll have a go at my neighbours tree ;)..
Thanks for cool post and interesting information. Enjoy your trees!
