I purchased this from an estate sale of a 90 year old doctor that passed. I do not think it is related to his profession but am including the info in case it helps. You can see the measurements from the pictures. I have had guesses such as umbrella stand, communion tray, etc. and nothing has checked out. It looks as if whatever it did it did hold something in all the small holes as there are hole directly under top holes that look as if they were routed out to help whatever was placed in holes; to stand up right. The dowel in the center is affixed with 1 flat head bras screw. Ok, go.
Art caddy?
test tube holder?
Never test tubes.....wood is porous and breeds bacteria. Looking at the small joints in the last picture is amazing let alone bending the wood. This isn't as old as the old doctor was and I suspect he had a hobby.
To clean to be an art caddy and the holes are too big and brushes would fall inside.
I know the family personally and his only hobby was model ship building. He was however a huge junker/picker, and I feel he picked this up somewhere along the way. Yes, the wood work is excellent with the inlay design on the inside and the perfect construction.
Never say never :-)
Look online & you will see lots of WOOD test tube holders.
It's not likely that it is as the holes in the bottom look quite shallow.
Made by some crafty person years ago to screw with people like us years later!!
My first guess was pipe holder but it is too deep. My last guess has been a hat feather retail display? I worked in my grandfather's clothing store growing up in the 90s and I remember plastic tubes with hat feathers in them. I was thinking that's what this may be. A retail display and you set your hat on the post. I can't confirm my guess either. Maybe it's the creation of a creative clothier.

I love this btw. Makes me want to start my own project.
Ya, then tuck them away in old buildings! :)
Funny. This guy had a 10,000 sqft warehouse packed. The estate company had to truck all the stuff to his home in 4 different sales, just to get it all.
Fly tying caddy? I searched wooden caddy with small holes and something similar?
Nowhere to put thread and if you drop anything in those holes, good luck getting it out. My kids currently have stuffed packing peanuts in the holes. Impossible to get out.
Not a dentist
Lipstick caddy?
