I love the glass on this lamp. The colour is so rich and the glass is so smooth. When empty there is a quilted pattern in the glass that can't be seen when full. I've found some numbers inside the iron foot reading; R something, 317220 and N something. Above these numbers are 2 triangles or arrows pointing away from each other (<>). This lamp came with an American #1 standard collar. It needed to be replaced and I did with another collar the same and placed a Miller Boudoir burner on it. Although it came with an American collar, I've seen a similar lamp with a European collar. Could anyone tell me if this is American or European? Or a rough time frame or a likely manufacturer. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I love it no matter where or when it came from but I'm naturally curious. Thanks so much.

The mark Rd 517220 is British. (Registered Design Number). It was registered in December 1907. It may apply only to the base and not the lamp. With a little more research, you may find out who make it.

Oh Wow!! Thank you IMASapp!! That is terrific. I would love to do a little more research unfortunately I'm not sure where to go to do this but I will search around and see what I come up with. I realize the font may have been changed in the many decades of it's life. You have been most helpful and informative and I genuinely thank you.

Thanks to IMASapp, who pointed me in the right direction. I found that Rg No. 317220 was registered to Burtle, Tate & Co. of Manchester, England between March 24, 1898 and April 14 1898. This lamp could have been made at a later time. The company closed in 1924. One excerpt mentioned that Mr Richard Burtle was a glass blower before becoming a partner in Burtle Tate Co and sometimes when he felt the need for special care, he would intervene and do the work himself to the point that once his workers threw down their tools and walked off the job. They soon reconciled and work resumed as usual. This company seems to be best known for opalescent glass swans.

Good for you! I am pleased you followed up on the tip......and, with eyes younger than mine, were able to get the Rd number right.

Thanks so much again, IMASapp! Don't feel bad about the number, I at first thought the 3 was stylized B and didn't even know the numbers were there until yesterday when I took a steel brush to it. I had plenty of chance to see it too because when I got this lamp the base teeter tottered and the fount was crooked in the brass cup and the collar was crooked on the glass!! So I filed the feet so they wouldn't teeter totter and were level. Then I remounted the glass straight and then remounted another collar straight. The mounting is not hard, it's the removal that is tough and time consuming. (and hard on the fingers. I wrap mine in hockey tape!)
