    I'm writing from Boston where I'm helping a friend with her in-laws' move to a retirement home and one of the items in the home is a Dunes Casino Las Vegas $5 chip. I think it might be very special!

    One expert told me: This does appear to be a 12th issue Dunes chip.

    Another expert told me this:
    If there is yellow between the green inserts it appears that you scored a 12th edition Dunes $5,chip and from what I can see in pretty good condition. There are only 8 to 15 known examples of this chip.

    And yes, there is yellow between the green inserts.

    Is it special?

      After checking several casino chip sites, I have found the following;
      I only found one reference to your chip as being a 1973 issue (olive green with green & gold inserts) - a collector site assigned the number TCR#N1520
      All other sites I checked had no reference or example shown but one site had five other Dunes $5 casino chips offered at these price values; (values given are just to give you a range idea)
      1960's issue $99 / 1983 issue (1) $185 / 1983 issue (2) $250 / 1988 issue $115 / and a 1989 issue $185
      So, the answer to your initial inquiry of "Is it special" - YES

      Thanks, aghcollect!
      Much appreciated... what do you think of what I found on ebay just now:

      That's very interesting - you should watch both of those listings to see if they actually sell and at what price is realized - you only showed one side of your chip but yours appears to be in "excellent" condition from the side you did show. You will notice that the lower price offered one ($800) has a scratch in one of the inserts which is probably why the value is diminished. Incidently, neither of those listings is actually giving a very clear view of their actual condition so I would be hesitant to even bid on either of them without a better overall look at them. :)
      Very nice find!!!

      Thx, again, Aghcollect. I will watch them. And I agree... I'd never spend that kind of money w/out seeing it... it's so hard to price this thing. It does, in fact, seem to be in great condition.....

      Suggest you not handle it so much because of oils in the skin - put it in a small ziploc bag to keep dirt off. Here is a link to my casino chips and tokens collection shown here on CW - I only have twelve in total;

      Thx for that suggestion! Nice collection of chips you have! Makes me think I should keep this and start my own! Did you know people who collect are more psychologically balanced than those who don't ? :)

      I collected all my own - frankly because I never wanted to leave a casino totally broke - I may have come out without a shirt, but still had $1 chip or token :))
