Was given this by a colleague at work, who told me his wife wanted it out the house,I was more than glad to swop him with an old hip flask and a really tattered leather bound whiskey bottle as i do not use alcohol and my office is filled with eclectic bric a brac, hence my nickname at work being THE CURATOR,I know very little about guns and ammunition as i am an anti firearm person, but the ingenuity of the person who made this item intrigued me,and I want to know what the numbers and alphabets on the casing means, and any ideas of age.Once again thanks to all that look and thanks in advance that comment and shed light on my curiosity.

Nice trench art piece. You don't mention the size but by appearance it could be a tobacco jar.

I collect trench art-- several hundred examples, with many posted on this site.

The marks on the bottom will give you manufacturer of the original shell, size, and year.

Based on the heavy polish, I would think that this is a European example (most UK items are polished) vs. a US version. The coins should also give you an idea of era and origin-- I am not a coin guy.

Looks WWI to me just going by what looks like high copper content by the pics. I'm not good at coins either. What are the dimensions?

The base of the shell casing is 7cm across and the coin is an Italian 10 lira dated 1927.

The base of the canister has an italian 1 lira coin from 1939.
