Here are a few of the Netsuke figures I bought at auction today. They are all about 2" tall and weigh around 2oz each.If anyone can tell me the material that are carved from or anything about the signatures, value etc,I would love to hear from you! Thanks!
they look like ox bone to me
I would guess the Netsuke figures are either ox bone or ivory. I have 2 very small
figures that I am not sure if they are Japanese or Chinese. One is a monkey either doing see no evil-speak no evil-hear no evil or else hr's saying shhh. The other one is a cat (which i think is Japanese). I have quite a few small items similar to those above but cannot figure out their origin. I know that they are very old, possibly antique. I've collected numerous antique plates, chargers and figurines from various antique auctions such as southerbys' etc. since the early 1970's and have a good collection of vases also. Someday I hope to find out the value and sell them.
I acquired a beautiful wooden carving of a dragon about 22 yrs ago andf the only marking i can find on it is the top which immitates fire coming out or a flame. On thr back of it is a square cut into thr wood and nothing more. the fire part of the dragon is removable and oner can toggle it sie to side. ther dragon is unique with its marble like eyes and also has ivory fangs coming from its opened mouth. If anyone is familiar with carved dragons and may know thr origin or information of history, i would greatly appreciate any feedback. It is approx. 24" long or longer and about 18" high or so and is beautifully carved .
