Presented to crew serving on the Kearsarge during it's skirmish with the Alabama June 12, 1864 at Cherbourg, France. Made by John Harriott of Boston. Awarded to my great great grandfather's brother W.Y. Evans.
Interesting/ historic item-- I have never heard of this particular presentation piece before!

If possible can you post some non flash photos later-- I'd like to see some details and the makers markings on the back.
Thanks.

MEDAL JOHN J. McALEER received for being part of the crew of the Kearsarge that sunk the Alabama on June 19th 1864
My pictures are horrible-I recommend looking at Manikin's photo. Exactly the same medal. Thanks, Manikin.
Your welcome Robbie :-) it seems these are not common to find . What a great keepsake you have !
Great piece & Mani solved the pic problem. As I remember, the Alabama's powder was bad. I read some yrs back that before the end of the war, that the South was producing "the highest quality powder in the world". Wonder if that is true? Anybody know? Maybe they took on French powder passed during their 2 hr. lunch breaks. LOL!
